Google Photos or a QR photo album?
A free shared album is sometimes all you need. Here’s what Google Photos and a WhatsApp group really do, where they struggle at a 150-guest wedding, and when a QR album is worth it.

When the free option is enough
- A small wedding, or just close family who already share a group chat.
- Most guests are younger and have a Google account, and one person (a bridesmaid, a sibling) is in charge of collecting and reminding.
- You don’t need a live wall, an invitation or a one-click download.
- Tip: if you go with Google Photos, turn the album link into a QR code for the tables, and before the wedding test adding a photo from the phone of someone without a Google account.
When a QR album is worth it
- A big wedding, 100+ guests of every generation: nobody needs an account or an app.
- You want everything in one place, with who sent what, and a one-click download.
- You’d rather not share phone numbers in a group of 150 people.
- You want a live wall at the venue, photo challenges or an invitation with RSVPs in the same package.
Good to know about Google Photos
The free 15 GB is shared with Gmail and Google Drive, and photos you save from a shared album count toward your storage.
Google’s steps for adding to a shared album begin with signing in to a Google account. Whether a guest can add without signing in isn’t stated explicitly, so test it before the day.
There’s no approval queue: the owner can turn off collaboration or remove items.
Good to know about WhatsApp
A group takes up to 1,024 members, but someone has to add each guest, and everyone sees each other’s numbers.
Photos arrive in the quality the sender chose (Standard or HD); the original survives only when sent as a document.
Videos are limited to 100 MB and 720p by default on faster connections.
There’s no album and no download-all: photos are scattered through the chat.

Questions
Can guests add to a Google Photos album without a Google account?
They can view through the link. For adding, Google’s help starts with signing in, and doesn’t say explicitly whether it works without. The safest thing is to test it before the wedding with someone who has no Google account.
Why do WhatsApp photos look worse?
WhatsApp offers “Standard” and “HD” photo quality; HD is clearer but uses more data. The original file is kept only when a photo is sent as a document, which wedding guests rarely do.
How much does a QR album cost?

Can I use both?
